This old and charming town dates back to 1839, with a rich history of travellers passing through. A true part of American history, the United States Government once built Fort Butler in what is now Murphy.             The beautiful Downtown Murphy features tree lined streets and numerous historic buildings that have been restored to their original state. Murphy offers a variety of restaurants, which range from casual, local hangouts to fine dining establishments.

            No stranger to culture and art, Murphy is home to plenty of opportunities for residents and visitors to take in a performance or special event. The first Friday of every month from March to October, the Shoppes of Murphy feature a live band performing. Other events in the area include a Dance Night and wine tastings at local establishments.

            Located just outside of Murphy in the neighboring Brasstown is the nationally recognized John C. Campbell Folk School. This non-profit adult educational organization was founded with the goal of nurturing and preserving the folk arts of the Appalachian Mountains and offers both weeklong and weekend classes in a wide range of subjects. The school also has regular concerts and community dances, which bring in many visitors to area along with the regularly attending residents.

Located at the junction of the Hiwassee and Valley Rivers, Murphy also offers a range of outdoor recreational activities to its residents. The nearby Hiwassee Lake is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the state. With local trout streams for fishing, trails for hiking and mountain biking, and nearby areas for whitewater rafting and ziplining, the town offers something for all interests and activity levels. The summer brings people flocking to the area and its nearby lakes and rivers to swim in the pristine, cool waters.
